Cubic Yard Calculations: Multiply length (in feet) by width (in feet) by the depth of material (INCHES) you need; then divide the total by 324 to determine the number of cubic yards. For example if you want a six inch layer of topsoil on 22 X 5 foot area, you’ll need 2 cubic yards (22 X 5 X 6 = 660, divided by 324 = 2). Allow 15% extra when compacting material. Calculate each area separately, then add cubic yards together.
